A total of 44 GFG member companies were represented by no fewer than 77
delegates (and 12 spouses/partners) at the GFG 2002 Fall Conference held at
the Marina Mandarin Hotel in Singapore from September 29th to October 2nd.
Host for the event was Singapore member Harbour Handlers, who provided a
superb level of hospitality and help to every visitor. Managing Director
Jeff Chua and his team – Liza, Duncan, Maureen, Susan and Kim – did a
magnificent job and everybody who attended was appreciative of their
efforts.
Conference business got underway on Sunday, October 29th with the Board of
Directors meeting and continued on Monday with the General Assembly, which
included some lively debate on the question of member to member liability
insurance fund. The fund is designed to enable the Group to provide some
support to members in the event of another member going into liquidation.
The debate concerned whether or not the annual contribution to the fund
should be increased but a ballot, taken the following morning, showed the
members to be in favour of maintaining the current level of premium.
In the afternoon delegates got down to the “real” business of the conference
– meeting other members on a face to face basis to discuss and develop
opportunities to work with each other.
GFG conferences are primarily forums that enable members to meet their world
wide partners at one time in one place on a regular basis. “Without GFG it
would be both financially and practically impossible for us to have partners
in so many countries,” commented one member. “Meeting face to face means we
can build real relationships, sort out any problems and develop joint
plans.”
In total just under 800 such meetings were held on the Monday and Tuesday of
the conference.
